Tell us a little bit about yourself
I’ve lived in Walkley for the past 25 years and understand the area. I have been a Green Party Sheffield City Councillor in 2006-10. I came within 41 votes of winning this ward in May 2019.
I am retired and in receipt of a state pension and therefore able to carry out the role of a Councillor without having the distraction of having to work for a living.
During the pandemic, I have been able to regularly walk around every part of the ward and deal with local casework.
What do you think makes a good local councillor?
Representing everyone irrespective of who they vote for.
Prioritising the poorest and most vulnerable.
Being out and about talking with people and finding out about local issues. Being responsive to resident enquiries.
Helping drive “bottom up” changes to help local communities thrive and prosper.
Seeking available funding to make ward improvements. writing and distributing local newsletters.
Thinking about the future including climate change and the ecological emergency in all actions I take.
Tell us three things you're aiming to focus on or achieve for your ward during your term as councillor
Focus on pressing local issues that have been brought to my attention in Walkley that have been difficult to deal with as a local resident eg. insect infestation in a tower block, re-routing the 135 bus route, improving green spaces, supporting independent local businesses and people working from home, speeding traffic and making streets safer.
Help local communities to build on the positive experience of the pandemic.
Making it easier for people to live carbon neutral lives and prosper in the work needed to make homes cheap to heat.
Tell us three things you're aiming to focus on or achieve for the city of Sheffield during your term as councillor
1. Putting the climate and ecological emergency at the heart of all actions of the Green Council Group in creating a city for the future. See the Green budget proposal here.
2.Restoring democracy to the city and the council chamber after the People’s Referendum is won and the council is in no overall control by one party, both very likely outcomes on May 6th.
3. Ending the top-down, approach to local government while making it absolutely clear that austerity is a cruel political choice and there is an alternative way of funding an economy that enables people and the planet to thrive.

Greens have encouraged and supported this over more than a decade as the negative impacts and services become clear. Many people are reliant on buses to get to and from their jobs and local services and local authorities need to be in control of services and routes. Good, affordable bus services can drive the increased passenger numbers that reduce cars on our streets, traffic jams, dangerous air pollution and green house gas emissions. The SYPTA is no longer fit for purpose.

The Green Party have supported this policy since the early 1980’s. Sheffield Greens have consistently supported a pilot in Sheffield. Universal Credit should be scrapped because its means testing and benefit sanction regime push people into further poverty and destitution. UBI provides a non-means-tested safety net. It gives people more choices enabling them to cut working hours to retrain, start new businesses, take part in community action, look after their families and improve their well being.
Democracy: How would you like Sheffield City Council to be run?
- By a leader who is an elected councillor chosen by a vote of the other elected councillors (this is how the council is run now)
- By one or more committees made up of elected councillors (this would be a change from how the council is run now)

Sheffield Green Party is a registered supporter of the Sheffield People’s Referendum. We were asked by the It’s Our City campaign group if we would deliver their leaflets and been doing so across many wards in the city. The last few years of “one Party” state rule by the Labour group has been damaging to local democracy. I am opposed to politicising the Police and Crime Commissioner because it is politically dangerous. I will be making this clear when I spoil that voting paper on 6th May. The city needs to be ensured that all people can contribute to its functioning. The fact that people with disabilities cannot enter some voting stations eleven years after the Equalities Act is a disgrace.

Sheffield Green Party posted this on our Facebook page on the morning the report was published: “Priti Patel described Black Lives Matter protest as “dreadful”. This whitewash report from the government dismisses institutional racism. They say the report is a “major shift in the race debate”. It’s a disturbing and dangerous shift that must be opposed. I say “Stand up to Racism”.
