Elected in 2021 Alexi Dimond candidate for Sheffield Local Election Gleadless

Alexi Dimond

Tell us a little bit about yourself

I’ve been an active campaigner in Sheffield for many years, and have campaigned on issues such as climate change, democracy, tax justice, race equality, womens rights, LGBTQI+ rights, refugee and migrant rights, housing and homelessness, for public ownsership of public services and for equal rights and justice for Palestinians. I work at City of Sanctuary Sheffield have worked as residential childcare worker, teaching assistant and for the NHS.

What do you think makes a good local councillor?

A good Councillor should be attentive to the concerns of residents in their ward, available, approachable and above all compassionate. They should live locally and be part of the community they represent. They should make particular effort to engage with seldom heard communities and help them to overcome barriers. They should encourage self-organising and participation of constituents.

Tell us three things you're aiming to focus on or achieve for your ward during your term as councillor

1) Waste, litter and green spaces: Ensuring longer opening hours and a booking system at the recycling centre on Blackstock Road, cheaper bulky waste collection for low-income households, and holding private contractors to account on waste, litter and flytipping – including in our parks and woodlands.

2) Transport: Action on air quality, plans for a 20mph speed limit around Myrtle Road, and the campaign to reopen Heeley Station, lobbying for bus franchising to bring buses under public control.

3) Inequality: insulating housing to reduce fuel bills and carbon emissions, supporting the poorest residents by offsetting council tax increases, support with housing by extending landlord licensing and repairs to council houses.

Tell us three things you're aiming to focus on or achieve for the city of Sheffield during your term as councillor

I will take action to address the climate emergency by making the city carbon neutral by 2030 in everything that I do as a Green councillor. I will support healthy spaces to live and work. For more details see the Green budget proposal.

I will work to ensure that the Council encourages and welcomes participation of local people, as well as accountability and scrutiny.

I will focus on breaking down barriers and reducing inequality. I will support the work of the Sheffield race equality commission and champion the rights of migrants, refugees and all marginalised communities.

I will lobby Dan Jarvis to introduce bus franchising in lieue of public or community ownership. Greens have encouraged and supported this over more than a decade as the negative impacts of privatisation on fares and services become clear. Many people are reliant on buses to get to and from their jobs and local authorities need to be in control of services and routes. Good, affordable bus services can drive the increased passenger numbers that reduce cars on the road, traffic jams and dangerous air pollution.

Economy: A Universal Basic Income pilot should happen in Sheffield

I have signed the UBI lab pledge to support UBI pilots. I am a long standing supporter of UBI. Sheffield Greens have consistently supported a pilot in Sheffield. The Green Party supports scrapping Universal Credit, means-testing and the cruel benefit sanctions regime, which have been found to push people further into poverty and destitution. UBI provides a non-means-tested safety net. People will have more choices, and more people will be able to cut working hours to retrain, start new green businesses, take part in community action or simply improve their well being.

Democracy: How would you like Sheffield City Council to be run?

  • By a leader who is an elected councillor chosen by a vote of the other elected councillors (this is how the council is run now)
  • By one or more committees made up of elected councillors (this would be a change from how the council is run now)

The strong leader model is undemocratic, authoritarian and leaves most people (and Councillors!) with no voice at all. Sheffield Green Party is a registered supporter of the Sheffield People’s Referendum. We were asked by the It’s Our City campaign group if we would deliver their leaflets and have been doing so across many council wards. The last few years of “one party” state rule by the Labour group have been damaging to local democracy. Vote for Change on May 6th!

Social: Do you agree with the finding of the Government's Sewell Report stating the UK is no longer institutionally racist?

Sheffield Greens posted this on our Facebook page on the morning the report was published: “Priti Patel described Black Lives Matter protests as “dreadful”. This whitewash report from the government dismisses institutional racism. They say the report is a “major shift in the race debate”. It’s a disturbing and dangerous shift that must be opposed. Stand up to Racism!”

This letter by me was recently published in the Star.
